It was another demanding 12 months for mainstream lenders as economic and affordability pressures continued to test their resilience, along with that of brokers. Rather than retreat, however, lenders rose to the challenge — pushing the boundaries of their criteria to help keep the market moving and boost gross lending.
The political landscape also played its part in shaping lender behaviour in 2025. A new government the previous year had brought a renewed focus on growth.
This in turn prompted the Financial Conduct Authority to clarify its rules on stress testing, which gave some lenders the green light to ease their mortgage requirements.
That optimism proved short-lived, however, as pre-Budget uncertainty later in the year led to a slower, more cautious market.
It is against this backdrop that Mortgage Finance Gazette’s Rated for Service 2026 celebrates those lenders that delivered a strong performance across multiple categories, despite tough conditions.
A total of 39 mainstream lenders have been assessed by brokers, with 10 excelling and earning Top Rated for Service status, and a further nine securing the coveted Rated for Service accolade.
At the top of the table there is little change from last year’s rankings, with Barclays the sole new entrant breaking into the Top Rated class. The Rated tier has seen more movement, welcoming Aldermore, Atom Bank and Pepper Money. The new entrants show just how closely aligned the specialist and mainstream markets have become. Meanwhile, the arrival of digital lender Atom Bank highlights the inroads that newer, more digitally focused banks have made.
Building societies have maintained their strong presence across both the Top Rated and Rated for Service categories, as the data shows.
When considering all mainstream lenders collectively, a few struggled with consistency in the Rated category, particularly in relation to sales support and communication.
On the whole, however, those who received Top Rated or Rated for Service accolades generally performed well across all areas.
All Rated for Service data is accessed via the dashboard. The ratings data for each lender category, and the rankings data for each assessment area, is available from the past four years. Lenders’ performance in any of the five assessment areas can be ranked across the entire lender panel for each lender category, and year.
Factor analysis is also available for each lender category to enable benchmarking across a panel of lenders versus the average score for each assessment area. This can be filtered by broker type and case load, providing tailored benchmarks for individual brokers (max. of five lenders).
