Housebuilder Weston Group has launched a build-to-rent unit that will foster development partnerships and joint ventures in the public and private sectors.

Its Weston Partnerships division will look for developments with later living housebuilders, local contractors, student accommodation providers, local authorities, Ministry of Defence site disposals and funds managing BTR portfolios.

The unit is led by development director Steve Hatton (pictured) and plans to draw on Weston Homes “new build, conversion and build-off-site expertise”.

The move comes after the housebuilder has already agreed several BTR projects, including a joint venture with Royal London Asset Management to build 411 BTR properties across two London developments at Bracknell Beeches and Town Quay, in Barking.

Weston Partnerships’ Hatton says: “Our priority is to work closely with our partners to help accelerate housing delivery, improve affordability, drive modern methods of construction innovation and uphold the highest construction standards.

“Through this expansion, we are well positioned to make a meaningful impact on the future delivery of housing.”

Weston Group chief executive Peter Gore adds: “While the group will continue to operate within the build-to-sell sector via our core Weston Homes division, the housebuilding industry has changed dramatically over the last few years and it is important for us to expand and create new income streams for the business.

“The BTR, local authority and some of the other deals we have already secured have the advantage of being forward funded providing an upfront income stream which is highly advantageous for our cash flow and financial strength.”
