London landlords and letting agents fines pass

Total fines for letting agents and landlord agents in Greater London since 2017 have reached £7.1m, says Kamma.

The technology firm gleaned its data from the May of London’s rouge landlord and agent checker.

It found that since the beginning of 2021, there has been an average increase of nearly £90,000 in fines every month, with total fines having risen from just over £6m in December 2020 to the headline figure today.

In the last four months alone, fines reached £600,000, with October’s figure coming to £372,874.

Kamma says one factor in these increases are local authorities “picking up the pace” of enforcement efforts.

Its analysis shows that Camden council is the most active in enforcement, with Newham and Southwark close behind.

Hammersmith and Fulham levy the highest average fine, however, at £19,800. Fines for non-compliance can run at up to £30,000.

Kamma chief executive Orla Shields says: “The lettings market is more regulated than ever before.

“Licensing schemes, fines and enforcement through rent repayment orders are all increasing, so it’s vital agents act to protect themselves, their landlords and of course their tenants.”
