Yesterday, the Palm Beach County School Board met to discuss the reopening plan for the upcoming school year. The meeting started at 2 pm yesterday, July 15th and lasted until late last night when the school board finally announced their decision early this morning just after midnight.

The Palm Beach County School Board voted 7-0 early this morning in favor of the superintendent’s recommendation to begin this upcoming school year with virtual learning. Students are supposed to be due back in the classroom on Monday, August 10th but due to the new decision for virtual learning the new start date has not been announced.

The meeting consisted of comments from parents, teachers, and members of the public. Board members also discussed the delay of starting the school year to the end of August or the beginning or September, but a formal start date has not been announced at this time. Among the issues discussed also included the impact on the school’s calendar and staff’s pay if the start to the school year got delayed.

The presentation summary was 52 pages long and outlined plans for virtual learning and a phased in person approach once Palm Beach County can enter Phase Two.

The Palm Beach School Board will meet again next week to discuss the concerns about students and families that do not have access to computers and or Wi-Fi in their communities.

The School District still has to submit its plan to the Florida Department of Education for final approval.
