The new Chancellor Rishi Sunak has confirmed that he will be delivering a Budget on March 11, less than four weeks into the job.

A question mark hung over whether or not the Treasury would stick to the previously scheduled Budget after the shock resignation of Sajid Javid last week.

But this morning Sunak tweeted a picture of himself working at his desk with papers spread out.

The tweet read: “Cracking on with preparations for my first Budget on March 11. It will deliver on the promises we made to the British people – levelling up and unleashing the country’s potential.”

Last week, Javid revealed that he felt he had no option but to quit after Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered him to sack his team of advisers.

Political pundits suggest the move was an attempt by Johnson and his adviser Dominic Cummings to take greater control over the Treasury.

As a result, some are predicting the forthcoming Budget will contain populist giveaways that Javid might not have been willing to sanction.

Before his promotion in the cabinet reshuffle last week, Sunak was chief secretary to the Treasury.

Johnson sacked housing minister Esther McVey and appointed Christopher Pincher to replace her.

Robert Jenrick retained his position as secretary of state for housing, communities and local government.
