Amazing Ideas for Setting the Thanksgiving Table

It’s likely your Thanksgiving get-together will be smaller than usual this year. The CDC is recommending small gatherings while many local/state lockdown rules are making it difficult for some to travel freely.

However, that doesn’t mean you need to skimp on the holiday decor. On the contrary, now is the time to go all out and enjoy Thanksgiving to the fullest with some amazing decorative styles to complement the occasion.

If you’re feeling stressed and short of ideas, check out the suggestions below. They’re adaptable, making it easy for you to mix and match styles to create a Thanksgiving ambiance unique to your home and loved ones.

Make it About the Fruits and Vegetables

If you’re traditional, the Horn of Plenty at the center of the table is a great option. Pumpkins also make a great centerpiece and can be purchased in various sizes and styles. However, these fall-themed fruit/vegetable centerpieces aren’t your only option.

If you want an elegant, fancy flair, try eggplant baskets coupled with a rich, purple tablecloth. They’re stunning when paired with grapevines strewn on the center of the table and a few bottles of purple wine. Or pair pine cones with green apples, zucchinis, green pumpkins and yellow flowers or with red apples, pears, and bell peppers interspersed with green leaves.

Make It Entertaining

Edible centerpieces are fun for all ages. They can be made using fruits, vegetables, or both. They look great and will keep kids occupied as you finish cooking. Set out one large one for a small table or various mid-size ones for a long table, and intersperse the centerpieces with decorative leaves and/or flowers to complete the arrangement.

Go With Flowers

Consider the ambiance you want to create when selecting arrangements. Red, purple, and violet are great for elegant, formal settings while traditional colors such as yellow and orange bring in a relaxed, autumnal feel.

If the table is long, consider placing several vases at intervals to create a centerpiece everyone can enjoy. Intersperse the flower vases with leaves or candles. For small tables, a single floral arrangement in a large vase may suffice.

At the same time, don’t confine yourself to putting flowers in vases. Receptacles such as wine glasses, carved pumpkin shells, glass bowls, a horn of plenty, and wood plant holders are all good floral display options. Alternatively, you could arrange your flowers around candles for an intimate atmosphere.

Select the Right Tablecloth

A tablecloth plays a huge role in creating the perfect Thanksgiving ambiance. What’s more, you don’t necessarily have to select a fancy one. In fact, a plain, solid-colored tablecloth is your best bet if you’re creating an ornate table centerpiece.

Checkered tablecloths are great for a homey, casual ambiance with a bowl of pumpkins or fall fruit in the center, or with a few red or orange candles and some white wine. Lace tablecloths give a room an elegant appeal when paired with flowers and/or candles for a formal dining atmosphere.

If kids are joining the Thanksgiving table, consider a dark-colored tablecloth that doesn’t show stains easily. Alternatively, you can select the tablecloth of your choice and cover it with a clear table protector for easy clean-up after the meal.

The Dishes

No Thanksgiving table setting is complete without the plates, cups, and silverware. The choice you make sets the tone for the table, from casual to elegant.

You don’t need matching wine glasses for everyone. Intersperse two or even three types of wine cups to create a varied yet matching table setting. Do you prefer beer over wine? If so, add beer mugs to the table and select the brew of your choice. They look great with a traditional tablecloth and fall-style decor.

Do your plates match the decor? If not, don’t be discouraged. You can buy disposable, yet classy Thanksgiving dinnerware sets on Amazon and other online shopping sites. As a bonus, disposable dinnerware makes clean-up a breeze as you won’t have so many dishes to wash after the meal.

Napkins and Name Tags

Napkins are both practical and decorative. You can buy ones to match your tablecloth, but plain white napkins are perfect with an ornate tablecloth.

Name tags aren’t a must, but they can add a touch of elegance to the meal; what’s more, they can help family members break out of routines and talk to those they don’t usually communicate with regularly.

There really is no “wrong” way to decorate your Thanksgiving table. Consider which arrangement best suits your fancy. You could even try out various arrangements beforehand. Don’t worry if your arrangement doesn’t come out as you initially envisioned it. Try again, or simply leave it as is. Decorating the Thanksgiving table is a great way to add flair to the holidays, but it takes second place to the love and companionship of family and friends that you’ll get to enjoy at this special time of the year.
