A Day in the Life of Carmen Green, senior mortgage and protection consultant, Xpress Mortgages

My alarm goes off at…

…7.00am, although I’ve usually been awake since 6:15am, when my other half gets up. He says I’m a light sleeper but I would argue he’s heavy footed.

I cannot leave the house without…

…my gym bag. I’ll be honest, I don’t always make it to the gym – but it’s the thought that counts, right?

I travel to work…

…by walking downstairs! In these tough times I am lucky enough to be able to continue working from home, and to provide the support needed by clients.

If any readers are concerned about their finances, please get in touch with an adviser. We are all here to help.

The main purpose of my job…

…‘on paper’ is to source and arrange finance against property.

The reality is that a large part of my role is about educating my clients, sharing my experience and knowledge, and providing the support they need throughout the whole buying process.

I sleep better knowing that, for each client I help, that’s one more person who has entered a mortgage contract having received bespoke advice and fully understanding their responsibilities. Professional advice is key.

I joined…

…Xpress Mortgages in 2015. Time flies when you’re having fun!

My typical day…

…I get up, do some housework (I like to keep my weekends free of chores) and get into work at 8:45am to go through my emails and prioritise my to-do list before our 9.00am office meeting.

I have client and lender meetings scheduled at intervals and like to spend the last hour or so catching up on paperwork. I usually leave the office around 6:30pm.

People may not know that I am responsible for…

…looking after their mortgage and protection needs throughout their lifetime.

A full review should be carried out each time someone’s circumstances change, rather than just when their fixed rate ends or they want to move house. For example, a change in salary or job, a new relationship, having children, youngsters fleeing the nest, separation, divorce or retirement will all affect the mortgage and protection needed.

A common misconception about my job is…

…that it’s a sales job. I am not a salesperson and I do not sell mortgages. I advise on, source and recommend financial solutions suitable for my client’s needs. I then arrange the finance directly with the lenders to provide my clients with a stress-free service.

My favourite work memory is…

…wow, how do I pick? The feeling when first-time buyers cross the finish line never gets old. We can all remember that day in our own life and I’m lucky enough to be able to experience it again and again through my clients.

A perk of the job is…

…being constantly surrounded by such a wide variety of people.

I love hearing people’s life stories: how they got to where they are, where they’re going next. It’s both motivating and humbling.

To unwind after work I like to…

…go to the gym then read my book in a candle-lit bath.

My role in five words is…

…slowly becoming a miracle worker!
