Building Reefs Off Palm Beach County

The Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation has been building reefs off the Palm Beach County coastline for several years. The Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation was created to honor the memory of Andrew Harris, a local young man, who was struck by a boat while snorkeling in the Jupiter Inlet. Andrew loved to dive and fish, and the foundation’s work will help assure the long-term health and vibrancy of the local marine environment.

The foundation began a substantial education initiative in 2018. The goal was to donate a 5-book set of the “Professor Clark the Science Shark” series to every third-grade classroom in Florida, 55,000 books in all! The goal was met!

Children love the story of the little boy, Andrew, who becomes a lifelong friend with an orphaned tiger shark pup. The premise of the book collection is that the aquatic mammals convey their needs through the boy to the human world. Together they clean up a reef and a beach. They then help save a sick turtle as they teach South Florida kids to love and respect the ocean.

The Andrew “Red” Harris Foundation continues to build valuable new reefs on inefficient sites off the shores of the Jupiter area coastline. Their goal is to help the marine habitat keep stride with the increasing pressures of damaging impacts including population growth and climate change. This benefits the public by enhancing the enjoyment and lifestyle of marine environments.
