The Town of Jupiter is celebrating its 96th year as an incorporated town in the state of Florida. Jupiter is the northernmost town in Palm Beach County and the sunny beachside town is home to more than 65,000 full time residents. The town was incorporated on this day, February 9th, in 1925.
The area where Jupiter now sits was originally named for the Hobe Indian tribe that lived at the mouth of the Loxahatchee River. But mapmakers misunderstood the spelling of the name of Hobe and recorded it at Jove which led to further misunderstanding that led to the name of the Roman God Jupiter. The god of Jupiter (or Zeus in Greek Mythology) is the chief Roman god, and the god of light, of the sky and weather, and of the state of welfare and laws.
Jupiter is known for its miles of sandy beaches and beautiful blue ocean waters, miles of hiking and biking trails, excellent rated schools, nature areas and parks, award winning restaurants and shopping, numerous outdoor activities, some of the best golf courses in the state, friendly neighborhoods, and much more.
Jupiter was rated as the 12th Best Beach Town in the United States by WalletHub in 2018 and as the 9th Happiest Seaside Town in the United States by Coastal Living. The town is home to 21.1 square miles and 1.1 square miles of water.
The most notable landmark and symbol of Jupiter is the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse. The lighthouse was completed in 1860 and is made of brick. The iconic lighthouse was painted red in 1910 to cover the discoloration caused by the Florida humidity. The lighthouse and the grounds are open daily for tours and visitors can climb up to the top of the lighthouse and take in the incredible town views.
